Every June, A Step Above puts on an annual recital. The recital is an opportunity for a dancer to perform in front of friends and family in a professional atmosphere (local theatre, costumes, and rehearsed choreography).

ANNUAL RECITAL OVERVIEW

DATES:

  • Recital session begins January 1st and focuses on choreography (Fall session focuses on technique).
  • Recital performances are spread across 4 days.

ATTENDANCE:

  • Each student is required to attend all weekly classes from now until the week of recital (excluding absences due to serious illness or death in the family).
COSTUMES:
  • On average, each costume costs $75.00-$100.00 and usually includes a combination of accessories (number and type of accessory vary).
  • Foundational pieces required for each class (tights, shoes, leotard, etc.), are the parent/guardian responsibility to purchase and is not included in the costume.
  • The balance for all costumes are due in early January and are non-refundable.
  • Any alterations due to a student's growth is on the parent/guardian responsibility.
RECITAL PACKAGE:
  • All students who choose to perform in the recital are assessed a $75.00 Recital Fee in May. This fee gives the dancer professional recital photos of each dance they are in, access to digital copies of all shows, and a cast t-shirt.
  • A professional photo shoot is set up during the month of June at the studio to capture each class in their recital costume. The digital rights to your student's photos are yours.

RECITAL TICKETS

  • Recital tickets are through an online 3rd party and go on sale at the beginning of June. Tickets range from $20.00 - $30.00 a ticket (price depends on venue).

WEEK OF RECITAL:
  • Mandatory Rehearsal is usually the week of the show. Rehearsal allows your student to run their routine on stage, in full costume and make-up.
  • We typically host 6-8 shows depending on the number of students performing in the recital. Shows normally take place on a Thursday - Sunday. Shows average 2.5 hours. Note: If your student is taking multiple classes, the chances are higher they will be performing across multiple shows. Also, siblings don't always perform in the same show if they are in different classes.

Welcome to our recital FAQ section. Below you will find almost everything you will need to make an informed decision to have your student perform in our annual recital. We update this throughout the year, so if you have a question that is not answered within this section we'll add the answer.

FAQS:

  1. Q. Why are there two costumes for my child's combo class? A. If your student is enrolled in any combo class (Pre Ballet/Tap, Ballet/Tap, HipHop/Jazz, etc.), your child will perform a dance for each style to show off all they have learned. Your child will perform both dances in the same show.
  2. Q. What if my student grows prior to the annual recital and the costume doesn't fit? A. We have a measurement guide for anticipating any growth that is listed in the beginning of each Costume Info pdf. Costumes can always be taken in, but can not be let out.
  3. Q. Are the costumes mine to keep after the recital? A. Yes. Your payment is to own the costume.
  4. Q. What if my student has to miss a class? Will they not be allowed to perform now? A. Your student is allowed to miss no more than 3 classes. After 3 are missed, then we connect with the parent/guardian to discuss the next step. Spot in the dance may be changed if your child doesn't know parts. If the child is behind they may need a private to catch up and this is an additional fee as the teacher will need to come in to work one on one with them. In rare cases, if the student only has a small amount of choreography learned their time on stage would cut to reflect what they know.
  5. Q. Is there a recital fee? If so, are parents tickets included? A. There’s a $75 recital fee due in May that includes your professional photos of your dancer in their costume(s), digital copies of all the shows & a cast t-shirt. Recital tickets are not included in the package fee. Tickets will go on sale the first week of June. A link to a 3rd party website will be sent out to you through email. Tickets cost roughly $20.00-$30.00 per person depending on the venue chosen. Please make sure you have the correct email with us so that you do not miss any important information.
